Linseed Oil Paint for Wood - Application

Allbäck linseed oil paint "Aged ocher" is a natural linseed oil paint for both interior and exterior wood surfaces, made in Sweden. These paints have been tested for over 30 years under the harshest weather conditions in the Nordic countries and beyond. They are among the purest natural paints on the market, as they contain no petroleum-based solvents or stabilizers.

Allbäck linseed oil paints are suitable for all types of wooden surfaces. Indoors, they are used for painting furniture, walls, ceilings, doors, and floors. Outdoors, linseed oil paints are especially suitable as facade and window paints. They penetrate deep into the wood, do not crack or peel, protect against UV rays, and repel moisture while preserving the wood’s natural properties. They are widely used in restoration projects.

Why Choose Allbäck Linseed Oil Paints?

  • 100% natural compositionfree from petroleum-based solvents, synthetic stabilizers, and harmful additives.
  • Deep penetration into wood – does not form a film, does not peel or crack, allowing the wood to "breathe."
  • Low consumption – covers twice the area compared to industrial alkyd or acrylic paints.
  • Ideal for historic building restoration – widely used in heritage conservation projects worldwide.
  • No harmful fumesespecially safe for indoor use, eco-friendly, and non-toxic.
  • Easy to renew and sustainable – can be repainted without sanding or removing the old paint.

Coverage

When painting with natural Allbäck linseed oil paints, 1L of paint can cover 15-25m² of planed wood surface. The consumption may be higher for the first coat.

For exterior applications, we recommend applying three coats since the paint naturally absorbs into the wood and polymerizes, forming a durable and long-lasting protective layer.

Drying Time

Around 24 hours at +20°C. Lower temperatures and high humidity can significantly extend the drying time.

Recommendations

For outdoor applications, we recommend adding the natural mineral supplement zinc oxide (ZnO), available in our store. ZnO should be added at approximately 10-20% of the paint volume (20% for light shades, 10% for dark shades) to provide additional UV protection. ZnO is a natural mineral widely used not only in natural linseed oil paints but also in cosmetics (sunscreens), pharmaceuticals, and other products.

We also recommend adding ZnO if the painted surface will be subject to heavy use – such as floors, tabletops, and cabinets – to ensure an even more durable coating.

Surfaces exposed to direct weather conditions (windows, terraces, floors, garden furniture, fences, etc.) should be primed at least once with cold-pressed Allbäck linseed oil before painting to provide additional moisture protection.

Color Shade

The color on the screen may slightly differ from the actual shade on the surface after application, depending on factors such as lighting or the type of wood. We recommend applying the paint to a small area first to ensure the chosen shade works in your setting.

How to paint with linseed oil paint?

Weather Conditions and Environment

Painting should be done when the air temperature is at least +12°C, and the relative humidity is below 80%. Do not paint on wet surfaces, freshly sawn timber, or wood with a moisture content above 14%.

Allbäck paints can be applied even in direct sunlight.

Surface Preparation

Clean the wooden surface of dust and small particles with a brush. If the surface is dirty, wash it with linseed soap and allow it to dry completely.

❗ If the wood surface has previously been painted with synthetic paint, it must be completely stripped of the old paint layer.

For surfaces exposed to direct weather conditions (such as decking, garden furniture, fences, etc.), we recommend priming at least once with cold-pressed Allbäck linseed oil to provide additional moisture protection. To do this, heat the linseed oil by placing the container in a water bath and warming it to about +60°C. Once the priming coat has completely dried, the surface is ready for painting.

Knots in the wood should be treated with two coats of shellac to prevent resin leakage and ensure a uniform color tone. After the shellac has dried, sand the treated areas with fine sandpaper, and the surface is ready for painting.

Preparing the Paint for Use

Stir the paint thoroughly before use. If necessary, the paint can be thinned with boiled Allbäck linseed oil, adding up to 5% of the total volume.

❗ Allbäck linseed oil paints must not be thinned with turpentine or other solvents, as they may contain chemical additives.

For exterior use, we recommend adding the natural mineral zinc oxide (ZnO), available in our store. Add ZnO to the paint in proportions of around 10-20% (20% for light colors, 10% for dark colors) to provide additional UV protection. ZnO is a natural mineral widely used in both linseed oil paint production and in cosmetics (sunscreens), pharmaceuticals, and other products.

We also recommend adding ZnO for surfaces that will be subject to heavy use—such as floors, tabletops, or cabinets—to ensure an even more durable coating.

Painting

Take a brush, apply the paint to a small section of the surface. Then, carefully rub the paint in the direction of the wood grain, followed by a perpendicular application across the surface width. Finally, smooth out the paint along the grain. The paint coat should be applied thinly and evenly.

Regularly stir the paint throughout the painting process.

Repaint the surface once it is completely dry.

Linseed oil paint not only colors the surface but also naturally absorbs into the wood and polymerizes, forming a durable protective layer against moisture and mold. For complete protection, we recommend applying 3 coats. The second and final coats should be applied thinly, following the direction of the wood grain.

Drying Time

The drying time for the paint is approximately 24 hours at +20°C. Drying time depends on several factors, such as air humidity, temperature, and sun exposure, and may be significantly extended at lower temperatures or higher humidity. The drying time for the second and third coats may be longer. Always ensure that the paint is fully dry before applying the next coat.

Brushes for Painting with Linseed Oil Paints

We recommend using Allbäck brushes, available in our store, or stiff bristle brushes suitable for linseed oil paints.

Between painting sessions, the brush should be stored in a container of linseed oil, completely covering the bristles. Brushes can be stored this way indefinitely, even at temperatures below zero. Before use, wipe the brush with a cloth.

❗ Do not store brushes in turpentine or other solvents, as they may contain chemical additives.

After finishing the painting job, wash the brush in warm water with linseed soap or regular soap, and dry it with a cloth.

Storage

Store in a place out of reach of children, tightly closed in an upright position. Once opened, close the container tightly for future use. We recommend storing at room temperature, although it is also acceptable to store at temperatures below freezing. Protect from direct sunlight and do not store near food.

When storing an opened container for a long period, natural oxidation may cause the paint to thicken. Strain the paint before reuse.

Shelf Life

Allbäck linseed oil paints have no defined expiration date as long as they are kept in unopened containers.

Cleaning

If linseed oil paint gets on your hands or objects, we recommend cleaning with linseed soap, regular soap, or natural resin turpentine.

Attention!

If you have used a cloth or sponge soaked in linseed oil or linseed oil paint during the painting process, it must be soaked in water or burned after use! Linseed oil undergoes a thermal reaction with fabric, which can lead to spontaneous combustion.
